Contact Craig Fuller at AAIR (use link below for his website). For about $10 or so he has a document showing part number prefixes and QA-stamps, etc. that help ID a crashsite.

Per your immediate need, Craig states, "B-17s are rough, really no difference between models and the prefix could be anything betweeen 1- and 99- ."
