After interviewing many people in Morganton, Nc, I finally located
the crash site. It had been fairly well cleaned up by the Army. There
is still a large debris field burried about 12" beneath the mulch
covered surface. I managed to collect a few small fragments. The local
paper shows it as a two engine C47D transport, not a B-17 as I had
thought. This is still not confirmed to my satisfaction. Mysteriously,
the engines were dynamited and there were no local photos of the site
even though the press was there and many curious on-lookers.
Any thoughts on this? Will try and locate an accident report.
