I have been working as a volunteer with the US Forest Service
on the ģTells Peak B-17Cī that crashed in Northern California in 1941.
Not only is this site of great interest from an aviation archeology standpoint,
it is a significant piece of local history for us. It saddens me to report
that over the last couple of years some major pieces have been removed
from the site. This summer there has been major damage done to the wreckage.
Please help get the information out that the Forest Service is taking this
theft and damage seriously, has an investigation underway, and is seeking
information about these activities.
Posters are now placed at the site that state: ģAttention Visitors.
This B-17C Crash Site is of Historic Significance. It is United States
Property and is protected by law. Damage to or removal of any portion of
this plane wreckage is a FEDERAL FELONY. A reward is offered for information
leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible
for the theft of and damage to this resource. If you have confidential
information concerning the theft of and damage to this resource and the
person(s) responsible, please contact the United States Forest Service,
Investigations Branch, 4260 Eight Mile Road, Camino, CA 95709, (503) 647-5327.
Help us keep this historic resource intact for future generations to enjoy.
It belongs to all of us.ī
I know we all hope that no one in the wreck chasing community is involved
with any of this. If, by chance, anyone here knows of someone involved,
Iķd recommend that they be told to report their actions and return items
before indictments are issued.
